Come On, Get Higher

Originally published on: 25/02/2011

I haven’t tried drugs (unless you count alcohol) so I don’t know about the high one can get, but I wonder why anyone would pay a good price for something which one can’t even always enjoy fully because of the fear of either dying or getting into trouble if someone finds out, or both. Especially when there are these other great alternatives:

Lame jokes

Most of the time they’re simply annoying (to most people) so you need to be in a slightly loopy frame of mind. But once you’re there, you find the silliest things hilarious. It may make people think YOU’re silly, but who cares, right?

Dancing

Apart from helping you express yourself through a creative medium – even if you’re really bad at it – dancing can get you amazingly charged up. It’s scientifically proven too – a phenomenon called “runner’s high” (I feel so good about knowing this). You keep going even when you’re tired, which is pretty great.

Music

All people (hopefully) have those specific songs that can make them insanely happy. Once you’ve found the songs that are perfect for you, you can stay high on them for as long as several days.

Smell of wet earth

The lovely smell of mud that you get when it’s drizzling somewhere nearby is simply intoxicating. You may like other smells, like certain perfumes, or even petroleum, but that earthy smell is something you can’t help loving all the time, something that doesn’t make you want to throw up when you’re sick. It can also induce spurts of inspiration, making you produce strange pieces of writing in the wee hours of the morning.

Coffee!

Aerated drinks do the same job when you actually drink them, but coffee works at many more levels.

  • Sight – Soft drinks are usually consumed in the can or bottle, and even if you’re pouring it out into a pretty glass, there’s nothing much you can do to make it interesting unless you add other awesome things (like ice cream) to it. Coffee is something you always drink from a special mug, and you can make pretty designs on the foam and stuff. Even if you’re too lazy to do anything else, drinking from any mug is way more elegant than drinking from a can or bottle.
  • Smell – The smell of coffee is one of the best and most easily recognizable scents. You can also recognize it from far far away, and it leads you to the actual stuff. Aerated drinks, on the other hand, don’t smell that great.
  • Taste – In terms of taste, you have way more varieties of coffee. How many different types of colas do you have, huh? And how much can you modify the taste?
  • Other random stuff – Coffee is grown naturally! Aerated drinks spoil your teeth! Um, etc.

This seems to have turned into a coffee versus aerated drinks debate, but what I’m trying to say is that coffee gets you high in several different ways, and it’s a wonderful thing.

There are other things I could list out, but I thought these were the more universal ones, so I’m done now.
