Everyday Poems

Here are some mundane things I tried to make interesting by writing them down as poems.

Haiku for the Weekend

A haiku is like
A weekend. Hardly begins
And is then over.

Fruit Fly in Coffee - limerick

I thought to myself, "This fruit fly
In my coffee will drown and die."
But turns out that it
Drank a little bit
And became unnaturally high.

Fruit Fly in Coffee - haiku

I thought the fruit fly
In my coffee would drown, but
It just turned hyper.

Dairy-free "Ice Cream" - limerick+haiku

It seemed easy to make, so I
Gave dairy-free ice cream a try,
But I should have known
From the name alone
That it was a terrible lie.

So then I ate some
Ordinary ice cream from
A shop. It was yum.

Street Pics - haikus

I took a photo
of a pretty lane, and drew
a picture of it,

then took a photo
of the picture so I could
show it to some folks.

A few days later,
I came across the photo
on my computer.

I thought to myself,
"Wow, my picture looks just like
a photo. Yay me!"

But turned out it was
the original photo
I was looking at.

Masquerade Glasses

My friend is getting glasses.

We were discussing frames
when suddenly, a brilliant
idea to me came.

Those masks in masquerade balls
or ones sold at a fair
could become frames for spectacles
you regularly wear.

They could use one-way mirrors
so the wearer can see
all of the world while hiding his
or her identity.

All those designs and colours!
Oh, wouldn't that be fine!
I'd have a dozen pairs, and I
would wear them all the time.

I'd made this as a decorative mask, but imagine it as a frame for glasses. Cool, right?

Until I have the time to design my own, here are a couple of images I'm borrowing from the mighty internet just to give you a clearer idea.

Sunday Evening Blues

Today I don't feel like doing anything...
Oh dear me, I'm actually quoting Bruno Mars. And not just ANY song of his, but the most annoying one ever. Or at least the most annoying one I've heard.

It's not like I didn't have something worthwhile planned for today's post. I swear I did. But it'll have to wait. You know how on some days you get lots of blog views without doing anything? Today is one of those days. It makes one think, "Eh, people are reading anyway, so do I really have to bother putting up something new?" I suppose I don't, but you know, Sunday = new post. So I always end up writing sometimes write junk like this. Does that make me a junkie? Okay, never mind. Please forget that I said that. Erase from memory. Say, I really like this Strikethrough option. Convenient. Yes, very. It makes me look like I've at least tried to write. If I just removed sentences, people would think I was just being lazy. Lazier than usual, I mean.

Okay, now I'm running out of random things to say. So move along. Do whatever you were doing, even if it was nothing.
Oh, or go here: http://www.roalddahl.com/. Because you just can't not love Roald Dahl.

Happy Sunday, everyone! Or what's left of it. Thank you for reading.

Random introspection

Ever since I've started blogging here, I've hit "Next Blog>>" several times to see what's out there. Most of the blogs I see usually happen to be in another language, and I often have to click the button several times before seeing one that's interesting enough to read. Sometimes I just get frustrated with the lack of quality and give up, but there have been times when I've found some pretty remarkable stuff.

One thing I've noticed on blogs by random people as well as friends is that most people seem to have a post coming out every two weeks at the most. It makes me wonder if I write a little too often. I sometimes wonder why I feel so compelled to put up at least two posts every week.

Maybe it's the excitement that comes with the beginning of a new blog. Maybe it's my current joblessness. Maybe it's to make myself feel like I'm doing something slightly constructive. Maybe it's to make it worthwhile for the people who've been so good as to follow my blog. Maybe it's the parents who ask me almost every other day if I've posted something new.

Or maybe I just enjoy putting up random stuff like this.

Most Unplanned Story Ever

Bear and Giraffe were lost in different parts of the jungle. It was getting dark and they were both a little worried. They were beginning to hear scary, unfamiliar noises all around them, too far away for them to see the source, but close enough to be terrifying.

As they tried to run from the howls and screeches, they (literally) bumped into each other. Each one thought he was about to be assaulted by the other, and they began to fight. Giraffe's neck got much shorter with his head being bumped hard into the trees over and over again. Bear had several wounds which had to be stitched up later.

Each one was so intent on leaving the other as bruised and battered as possible that neither of them noticed Zombie approaching. By the time they did, it was too late.
They had to be tranquilized indefinitely. Zombie has their brains now, and I have their bodies.

There they are.

To anyone who's wondering what on earth that was all about, I share your sentiments, because honestly, I don't know.
I happened to draw a picture of one tiny corner of my room and thought I'd write something to go with it. Wrote that in a couple of minutes and haven't really bothered reading it through after finishing, so if you think it's lame, you're probably right.
But hey, it's still better than Twilight!

"What's Up?"

Originally published on: 07/03/2011

It’s hard to chat with someone without the question “What’s up?” popping up at some point, and it’s slightly irritating because I hardly ever end up saying what I really want to.

How I’d like to respond, depending on the situation:

You will not believe what happened!

I just created the most powerful taser in the world, my boss quadrupled my salary, I met Westlife who sang to me for an hour, all the terrorists are dead, I’m eating a whole tub of ice cream right now, and everything’s perfect.

Everything is so messed up!

My 20 year old dog died, I was robbed on my way back home this evening, my boss fired me and gave my job to that smug moron, I’m out of coffee, I’m stranded in the middle of nowhere, and everybody hates me.

Too much work

I have to write a 10,000 word research paper, paint my room, clean up the mess in the garage, bake mushroom tarts and do so many other things by tomorrow that I don’t even have the time to breathe or tell you about half the stuff I have to do.

The weather is…

*Heartfelt rant about how wonderful or horrible the weather is*

Nothing. I don’t have a life

*Bored whining about how nothing is happening*

I’m not telling you

*Silence accompanied by silent laughter at having sufficiently dissuaded the other person*

The sky

(Another – and probably more annoying – way of saying “I’m not telling you”)

I already told you!

I spent the last 15 minutes answering that very question. How much more do you expect from my life? I’m done talking about what’s up with me, so stop asking me that and at least try to think of other questions if you have nothing to say about what’s up with you.

Luckily I do have friends who I can respond to in any of these ways, but with most other people, that question usually just makes me want to respond with another question: Do you really care?

But since one needs to try and be nice sometimes, I often go with the most vague and mundane reply ever: Nothing much.

Come On, Get Higher

Originally published on: 25/02/2011

I haven’t tried drugs (unless you count alcohol) so I don’t know about the high one can get, but I wonder why anyone would pay a good price for something which one can’t even always enjoy fully because of the fear of either dying or getting into trouble if someone finds out, or both. Especially when there are these other great alternatives:

Lame jokes

Most of the time they’re simply annoying (to most people) so you need to be in a slightly loopy frame of mind. But once you’re there, you find the silliest things hilarious. It may make people think YOU’re silly, but who cares, right?

Dancing

Apart from helping you express yourself through a creative medium – even if you’re really bad at it – dancing can get you amazingly charged up. It’s scientifically proven too – a phenomenon called “runner’s high” (I feel so good about knowing this). You keep going even when you’re tired, which is pretty great.

Music

All people (hopefully) have those specific songs that can make them insanely happy. Once you’ve found the songs that are perfect for you, you can stay high on them for as long as several days.

Smell of wet earth

The lovely smell of mud that you get when it’s drizzling somewhere nearby is simply intoxicating. You may like other smells, like certain perfumes, or even petroleum, but that earthy smell is something you can’t help loving all the time, something that doesn’t make you want to throw up when you’re sick. It can also induce spurts of inspiration, making you produce strange pieces of writing in the wee hours of the morning.

Coffee!

Aerated drinks do the same job when you actually drink them, but coffee works at many more levels.

  • Sight – Soft drinks are usually consumed in the can or bottle, and even if you’re pouring it out into a pretty glass, there’s nothing much you can do to make it interesting unless you add other awesome things (like ice cream) to it. Coffee is something you always drink from a special mug, and you can make pretty designs on the foam and stuff. Even if you’re too lazy to do anything else, drinking from any mug is way more elegant than drinking from a can or bottle.
  • Smell – The smell of coffee is one of the best and most easily recognizable scents. You can also recognize it from far far away, and it leads you to the actual stuff. Aerated drinks, on the other hand, don’t smell that great.
  • Taste – In terms of taste, you have way more varieties of coffee. How many different types of colas do you have, huh? And how much can you modify the taste?
  • Other random stuff – Coffee is grown naturally! Aerated drinks spoil your teeth! Um, etc.

This seems to have turned into a coffee versus aerated drinks debate, but what I’m trying to say is that coffee gets you high in several different ways, and it’s a wonderful thing.

There are other things I could list out, but I thought these were the more universal ones, so I’m done now.
